How to play Peg Solitaire

Open Peg Solitaire, check the instructions and begin a round. Leave a single peg on the English cross board. Check the relevant rule before repeating a move. Keep the instructions close while learning this activity. Use the example below to understand a decision.

English 33-hole cross; central starting gap; any final single peg wins.

Review a difficult moment

When a decision goes wrong, compare it with the common mistake described below. Start again only when you intend to leave the current round. Keep the objective visible.

Your goal

Leave a single peg on the English cross board. Use the instructions to see which actions move you towards it. Start with a deliberate move.

Step by step

  1. Select a peg and an empty hole two squares away.
  2. Jump horizontally or vertically over one peg, removing it.
  3. Plan so remaining pegs can still interact.
  4. Undo repairs a deadlock.

Controls

Click or tap a piece and destination; use the turn indicator and legal-move feedback. A careful first action helps you become familiar with the layout. Contact us with the game and device if a control does not respond.

A useful example

Peg–peg–empty in one line permits one jump. Focus on why the action is allowed, not only its outcome. Notice the change in the playing area.

Watch out for this

Diagonal jumps and pulling are not allowed. Compare the situation with the worked example. Choose one rule to keep in mind for this round. Apply it consistently rather than guessing what another version might allow.
